July
4th, 2005 We are looking for boat owners to join with us in sharing in the American Spirit by commemorating our country’s birthday and celebrating the 4th of July at the American Legion Post 291. Each year the Newport Beach Harbor becomes a festive delight as owners adorned their boats in red-white-&-blue decorations, balloons, streamers and waving flags that outline the skies as Sousa Marches and Anthems fill the air. Families and friends from near and far arrive at the bay front beaches and yacht clubs along the peninsula and the many islands, vying for the best spot to settle down and view the boat parade. The Newport Beach Harbor Patrol’s red fire boat turns on the firewater monitor announcing the beginning of the time-honored Old Glory Boat Parade. The actual parade starts at 1:00PM. The boats try to outshine one another in the “Spirit of Competition” by stimulating the loudest ovations from the onlookers. The owners always out-do themselves each year hoping for a trophy inscribed with “best decorated”, “outstanding music”, “finest costumes”, “most creative animation”, “greatest spirit”, and the coveted “Sweepstakes and Commodores Trophy”. The all day fun-filled gala with lots to do, will be at the American Legion Post 291 beginning at 7:00AM where volunteers will prepare a fine Pancake Breakfast for a donation of only $10 per person. Lunch with Tri-tips or chicken will begin around 12:00PM and will also be for a donation of only $10 per person. Dinner will feature steak with all the trimmings but will be pre-sold; the cost will be a donation of only $15 per person. Raffle tickets are available with great prizes to be given away. There will also be bands throughout the day for your entertainment. And what could be a better way to conclude the day long event than sitting on the American Legion Post 291 patio and watching fireworks that will start around 9:00PM. Tickets for the meals are available at the American Legion Post 291 the day of the event. To get your entry packet to enter your boat in the parade, contact one of the following yacht clubs. You must register and receive an entry number to qualify for the judging and receive a trophy. There is no fee to register.
