Dear Members of American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291,

I am reaching out to our membership with an important opportunity to make a direct and meaningful difference in the lives of veterans throughout Orange County.

We have been approached by two generous members of our American Legion family, who have offered an incredible $10,000 matching fund challenge in support of our Veterans Emergency Assistance Fund (VEAF).

Here is how it works:

For every dollar our membership raises between November 2 and November 11, 2026, the donors will match that contribution, up to a maximum of $10,000!

Our goal is to raise $10,000 so we can unlock the entire $10,000 match and generate $20,000 for veterans in crisis.

This is an opportunity we cannot afford to overlook.

WHY THIS FUND MATTERS

Since its establishment in the fall of 2019, our Veterans Emergency Assistance Fund has served an important purpose: helping veterans throughout Orange County who find themselves facing unexpected emergencies and financial hardships.

Sometimes a veteran needs help paying rent to avoid eviction. Sometimes a vehicle breaks down, and they cannot get to work. Other times, an unexpected family tragedy, past-due bills, or an emergency creates a situation that requires immediate intervention.

These are not hypothetical situations. These are veterans in our own communities who have served our country and sometimes find themselves with nowhere else to turn.

VEAF allows our Post to step forward when a veteran needs help.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR ASSISTANCE?

Our fund is designed to support veterans experiencing a documented emergency.

Generally, eligibility includes:

  • An Honorable Discharge or General Under Honorable Conditions.
  • Verification of military service through a DD-214.
  • An existing and documented emergency or financial crisis.
  • Supporting documentation establishing the emergency, such as eviction or three-day notices, police reports, unexpected family deaths, emergency bills, or other relevant records.

Assistance may include rental assistance, vehicle repairs, utility bills, temporary lodging, transportation, gas and grocery cards, and other qualifying emergency needs.

TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

I understand that when members donate their hard-earned money, they want to know where it goes and how it is being used.

As your Post Service Officer, I want to emphasize that transparency and accountability are important to us.

VEAF financial activity and assistance are reported monthly during our General Membership meetings. We share how much has been raised, where funds have been distributed, and how we have helped veterans in need, while protecting the privacy and confidentiality of those receiving assistance.

I personally contribute to this fund, as do members of our Executive Committee and other Post leadership. We believe in supporting what we ask others to support.

A PERSONAL REQUEST TO OUR MEMBERSHIP

As we approach the United States Marine Corps Birthday and Veterans Day, I ask each of you to consider what these occasions truly represent.

We celebrate the men and women who have worn the uniform, the sacrifices made by their families, and the commitment to never leave a fellow service member behind.

But supporting veterans cannot end with ceremonies, celebrations, or words of appreciation.

Sometimes it means helping a veteran keep a roof over their head. Sometimes it means getting their vehicle repaired so they can continue working. Sometimes it means stepping in during the darkest moment of someone’s life and reminding them that their service and sacrifice have not been forgotten.

That is what VEAF represents.

We have an opportunity to turn $10,000 in member contributions into $20,000 in emergency assistance for veterans.

Whether you can contribute $25, $50, $100, $250, or more, every contribution brings us closer to our goal. No donation is too small, and every dollar will make a difference.

Please consider making a contribution between November 2 and November 11, 2026, and help us take full advantage of this generous matching opportunity.

Let’s demonstrate what American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291 stands for. Let’s continue leading by example and supporting the veterans who need us most.

We served together. We stand together. And we take care of our own.

Thank you for your continued generosity, commitment, and dedication to our veterans and our community.

Respectfully,

Cory Vigil
